Center for Employment Oppertunites: Action Environmental Group

If you have been following our blog you already know that recently the Wall Street Journal covered the story of one of our employees Hector Morales. Hector's journey from being incarcerated to joining the Center of Employment Opportunities (CEO) to becoming a model member of our Action team is inspirational to say the least.

The Center for Employment Opportunities (CEO) is dedicated to providing immediate, effective and comprehensive employment services to men and women with recent criminal convictions. The highly structured and tightly supervised programs help participants regain the skills and confidence needed for a successful transition to a stable, productive life.

We are so proud to be apart of this program and support those who want to work find a fulfilling career. Above is a video with members of the Action team including Head of Safety Ken Levine and CEO Ron Bergamini. Enjoy!

Depicts 1.14 million brown paper supermarket bags, the number used in the US every hour.

Depicts 106,000 aluminum cans, the number used in the US every thirty seconds.

Depicts 30,000 reams of office paper, or 15 million sheets, equal to the amount of office paper used in the US every five minutes.

Depicts 426,000 cell phones, equal to the number of cell phones retired in the US every day.

Lou Gehrig Middle School

Recyling Contest at the Lou Gehrig Middle School

Action Environmental Group challenged four classes at the Lou Gehrig Middle School, IS 151 to develop innovative ways to teach other students and their community the value of recycling. The students created their own recycling “green machine”, a presentation to educate parents at parent teacher night, composed a song about recycling and even designated themselves to handle all recycling issues at the school.   Nicole Simon, ranked No.1 in her eight grade class, created the winning idea; a bake sale where recyclables were used as currency to purchase baked goods. Nicole won the contest for her class by designing this innovative recycling currency.

On September 18th, Action is taking 80 students to the Yankee Game where CEO Ron Bergamini, Principle Rivera and Nicole Simon will be apart of the opening ceremony.

Susan G. Komen

Action is proud to announce that we will be donating our services to the Komen Greater NYC Race for the Cure®  event this Sunday, September 9th. To make this event more green, we set up designated stations for recycling, solid waste and composting. Action is no stranger to sponsoring events that help find the cure for breast cancer. In the past, Action has sponsored many events like A Celebration of Courage for the Octoberwoman Foundation. This is an issue close to the hearts of many of our employees and we are proud to support such a wonderful cause.

“Many of Action's family has been touched by breast cancer. Fortunately many though not all of the incidents have ended well thanks in large part to the efforts of the Susan G Koman organization. We are proud to help advance that agenda which also includes a commitment to our environment through a robust recycling program. “- Ceo, Ron Bergamini

Action will have a booth stationed at the event and employees will be participating in the walk.

From Prision to Paycheck

This month one of our employees Hector Morales was featured in an article, "From Prision to a Paycheck" in the Wall Street Journal. Here at Action, we are proud to participate in a program sponsored by the Manhattan Institute which pushes ex-offenders toward "rapid attachment to work."

"This fast-track approach isn't typical. For the newly released,
the usual approach might be called services first—offering job training, drug treatment and help finding housing, all thought to necessarily precede job-seeking. The results often haven't been tracked and overall have been disappointing, based on recidivism data.
Now, programs that emphasize work first have begun to sprout up around the country, typically run by nonprofit groups."

Hector is a wonderful employee and we are delighted to have him on our team.

Global Green visits our Recycling Facilites

Global Green Tour

August 10th 2012

We love to team up with organizations like Global Green who also see a greener future and value sustainability. On August 10th, Global Green's Coalition for Resource Recovery (CoRR) team took a tour of our material recovery facility (MRF) today in the Bronx. Also on the tour were representatives from CoRR members Design & Source, Transtech, and Pret A Manger, whose Head of Sustainability, Nicki Fisher, was in town visiting from the U.K.
